Addressing the Exclusion Phenomenon in American STEM Education: Challenges and Solutions
Abstract
The American STEM education system, renowned globally, faces significant challenges as underrepresented groups continue to experience exclusion due to factors such as information gaps, cultural isolation, resource barriers, and persistent stereotypes. This exclusion exacerbates the disconnect between the surplus of qualified talent and the critical shortage of STEM professionals in a context of rising unemployment, ultimately undermining the U.S.’s global competitiveness. Structural prejudices and inequitable access hinder participation from these groups, leading to identity distortions and increased social marginalization. While notable strides have been made through enhanced governmental planning, funding allocation, and collaborative efforts to improve educational experiences and retention rates, fundamental issues persist. The entrenchment of opportunity hoarding and deep-seated cognitive biases perpetuate ideological and cultural prejudices, fueling ongoing debates around educational equity versus reverse discrimination. Therefore, it is essential for the U.S. to implement targeted governance measures to address these disparities and promote inclusivity in STEM education.
