Perspectives of Yan Yuan's reforming concepts of the classical academy

摘要:

颜元在以"理"为标示的中国学统既不能满足士人"志于道"的内心的需求又不能担当"济世"大任的情况下, 对大学之道进行了自主、内发式变革, 主张博大包容, 分科教学, 道艺并重, 义利统一, 万物一体, 习动贵行, 实现由"理"向"实"的转换。这一变化更符合大学发展要求, 然而中国大学之道并未因此而实现根本性转变, 显示出大学之道的转换必须以社会体制的变革为前提。

Abstract:

When Yan Yuan finds the concept of classical academy impossible to meet the demand of scholars, or to relieve the society, he motivates a spontaneous reform of the tradit ional education by advocating a comprehensive, and all-inclusive learning, which focuses on combinations of doctrines and skills, righteousness and interest, aiming at transition from idealism to realism. Even though his reform proposals are applicable to the development of Chinese hig her learning, they cannot fulfill the expected transition. Hence, the writer of the paper concludes that a proper social system must be reformed in advance.
