Little is known that the university’s rapid ascent is inextricably linked to the personal involvement of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who served as the Privy Counselor and prime minister of Saxe-Weimar during that period. Goethe’s strong support and commitment to the construction and revival of the University of Jena contributed significantly to the flourishing of the university. The university attracted a gathering of eminent scholars, fostered diverse schools of thought, and cultivated a vibrant research culture,becaming a pioneer of modern universities in the 19th century, exemplified by the University of Berlin. Goethe’s contributions to the university are more practical than theoretical. He emphasizes the university’s role in the development of national culture and considers teachers as the core of the institution. He recruited many outstanding talents for the University of Jena. Central to his educational philosophy is the concept of “allgemeine Bildung,” or comprehensive education, reflecting his belief that the era of specialized knowledge education has ended. Ironically, while celebrated as the “great master of literature,” his crucial contributions to the development of modern universities have often been overshadowed by his literary eminence.
