Renowned University Presidents Amidst the Social Changes in China in the Past Century

摘要:

在中国社会近百年变迁中,我国著名大学校长与其所处的时代产生了紧密的联系。在“由专制到共和”的背景下,著名大学校长志在培养具有健全人格、共和精神、广博知识的人,办学术为先、教授治校、学生自治的民主大学,发展尊重个人、改良社会、挽救国家的教育。在“由旧到新”的背景下,著名大学校长志在培养具有坚定立场与过硬本领的社会主义建设人才,办目标引领下组织制度健全的社会主义人民大学,发展中国共产党领导下的社会主义新教育。在“由乱到治”的背景下,著名大学校长志在培养全面发展的现代化建设高级人才,办综合型、研究型、开放型的现代化大学,发展具有中国特色的现代化一流教育。著名大学校长具有思想先进、敢为人先的精神气概,遵循规律、果敢决判的战略眼光,渊博学识、追求卓越的业务能力,严慈相济、松弛有度的管理智慧,是“识时务”之教育家的典型代表。

Abstract:

Amidst the social changes in China in the past century renowned university presidents were inextricably tied to their era. During the transition “from a despotic regime to a republic government,” they aimed to cultivate people with healthy personalities, republican ideals, and comprehensive knowledge. The democratic universities under their guidance prioritized learning and academic work, practicing professorial governance and students’ autonomy. They develop education that respects individuals, reforms society, and saves the country. During the transition “from the Republic of China to the People’s Republic of China,” they aimed to cultivate staunch and competent socialist constructors. Under their leadership were socialist people’s universities with well-organized and well-targeted systems. They develop new socialist education under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. During the transition “from chaos to governance,” they aimed to cultivate top-level, well-rounded talents for China’s modernization drive in open, comprehensive, and research-based universities. They develop modern first-class education with Chinese characteristics. These presidents are distinguished for their pioneering ethos and educational philosophy ahead of their time. With their strategic insight, they respect rules and make resolute judgments. They are professionally competent with broad knowledge and an unyielding commitment to being the best. They are rigorous and compassionate in their management, with common sense and insight. They are examples of educators with a deep understanding of the existing conditions.
