Foreign Research on Education for Sustainable Development in Early Childhood: Core Issues and Expansion Space

Abstract

Abstract:

As an emerging research field, education for sustainable development in early childhood has received much attention from Western countries in recent years. Through combing the relevant foreign literature, this paper analyzes the basic connotations and core issues of early childhood education for sustainability. It is found that the Western countries mainly understand the early childhood education for sustainability from two perspectives: environmental orientation and the “Three Pillars.” The core issues in current international research on early childhood education for sustainability include children’s understanding of sustainable development, teachers’ understanding of early childhood education for sustainability, practice approaches of early childhood education for sustainability, and evaluation of early childhood education for sustainability. In the future, we should strengthen the research in the economic and social fields, the research on the evaluation of early childhood education for sustainability, and the research on the integration of sustainable development education and the curriculum of preschool education institutions.
