重思“复演论”及对儿童学研究的影响和启示

Rethinking Recapitulation Theory and Its Influence and Enlightenment on Pedology Research

摘要:

“复演论”在早期东西方儿童学研究运动中发挥了重要作用,对包括生物学、心理学、人类学、文学和教育学等儿童研究领域而言,其影响不亚于达尔文的生物“进化论”。时至今日,它仍以不同形态和方式存在并影响着儿童研究领域,回顾该学说的发展历程并剖析其实际影响,对于建设具有中国特色的儿童学研究话语体系具有关键性的意义。从维科、黑格尔、海克尔、霍尔、鲍德温、布留尔和皮亚杰,“复演论”经历了复杂的发展历程并不断得到修正,其准确表述是个体发育复演种系发育。核心思想主要体现在生物学、心理学和社会文化三个层面:从生物学的层面上说,高等有机体的发育过程都要经历从简单到复杂、从同质到异质、从普遍到特殊的过程;从心理学层面上说,强调儿童个体的精神发展脉络遵循了人类种系的发展历程;从社会文化层面而言,“四大信念”有其科学性也存在着局限性。该学说直接推动了当时儿童心理学和儿童文学等领域的产生与发展,也推动了当时的新教育改革运动,但同时也存在机械类比、线性思维、白人至上等历史局限性,这些问题逐渐为后期研究者所修订。因此,新时代中国的儿童学研究需从中吸取经验和教训,避免种族、民族或文化的“霸权”主义及各种意识形态偏见,积极推动本土化跨学科的深度研究,并加强与世界不同文明国家的对话,使经由学术研究所得出的结论真正造福于现实中的儿童。

Abstract:

Recapitulation theory played an important role in the early pedology research movement in both the East and the West, and its influence on the studies on children, including biology, psychology, anthropology, literature and education, was no less than Darwin’s theory of biological evolution. Up to now, it still exists in different forms and ways and influences the studies on children. Reviewing the development of this theory and analyzing its actual influence is of crucial significance for building a discourse system for the studies on children with Chinese characteristics. Through Vico, Hegel, Haeckel, Hall, Baldwin, Lvy-Bruhl and Piaget, recapitulation theory has gone through a complex history and has been constantly revised. Its accurate expression is “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny.” The core ideas are mainly reflected in three aspects: biology, psychology and social culture. From the biological aspect, the development of higher organisms has to go through a process from simple to complex, from homogeneous to heterogeneous, from general to special. From the psychological aspect, it emphasizes that the spiritual development of children follows the development process of human species. From the social culture aspect, the “Four Beliefs” have both scientific nature and limitations. The theory directly promoted the emergence and development of children psychology and children literature, as well as the new education reform movement at that time. However, it also had historical limitations, such as mechanical analogy, linear thinking and white supremacy, which were gradually revised by later researchers. Therefore, in the new era, studies on children in China should learn from it, avoid racial, ethnical or cultural hegemonism and various kinds of ideological prejudice, promote localized and interdisciplinary in-depth research, and strengthen dialogue with countries of different civilization in the world, so that the conclusions reached through academic research can really benefit children in reality.
