美国高校促进“第一代大学生”适应探论

Facilitating Adaptation of First-Generation College Students in American Universities

摘要:

美国大学生源结构中“第一代大学生”占据相当大的比重,他们不仅在经济上贫穷,更面临着社会资本和文化资本的双重缺失。“第一代大学生”呈现校园融入困难、辍学率高、就业难等特点。他们“挣扎”在大学边缘,面临着自我身份认同的断裂,难以适应大学生活,成为“校园中的孤岛”。基于此,学校层面在理念转向、制度优化、文化重建、课堂教学四个维度对“第一代大学生”进行援助与干预,帮助他们形成积极的自我概念、增强自我效能感、提升应对困境的态度及能力,帮助他们积极适应大学生活,完成从大学向社会的顺利过渡。

Abstract:

First-generation college students account for a large proportion in the student composition of American universities. Besides poverty, they also face deficiency in both social capital and cultural capital. They are characterized by difficulties in campus integration, high dropout rate and employment difficulties. They are "struggling" on the margin of the university, up against a broken self-identity. Like an isolated island in campus, it is hard for them to adapt to university life. Accordingly, American universities provide aid and intervention in four aspects:change of perception, institutional optimization, cultural reconstruction and classroom teaching, helping them to build positive self-recognition, enhance sense of competence, improve their attitude and ability to cope with difficulties, so that they actively adapt to university life and make a smooth transition from college to society.
