Since the 1990s, the rankings of universities have become popular in the field of higher education in China. We should look at both sides of its role in China’s higher education reform and development in a historical context. The university ranking is an academic service industry in the media age. The media myth field it creates has a negative impact on the correct use of the university rankings by various stakeholders including universities. The key for rational use of university rankings is “for my own use.” The ranking orientation should be transformed into the construction orientation. Efforts should be made to carry out the quality construction and development of colleges and universities.
