The poetic expression of the physical politics—On the transforming arts in the novels by Mao Dun

Abstract

Abstract:

It is argued that the narrow sense of the transformation refers to the interchanges of different kinds of life or physical life, which originates in classic legends or religions. The literary transformation arts, based on the modern philosophical reforms, civilization crisis, and literary desire, exist in modernity and realism. The transformation arts in the novels by Mao Dun that are more related to realism are concerned with crisis caused by historical chaos in the earlier stage, and with the pursuit of the esthetic modernity in 1930-40s. The dynamic, lyric, and philosophic features in Mao Dun's novels reflect the physical politics, all having to do with political metaphors.
