Abstract The twentieth century is"a short century."The mankind spent the first half of the century in wars and revolutions,and in the second half the mankind has striven arduously for peace and development.The world,with its pattern of the two poles the East and the West having terminated,is now developing towards that of a multipolar world.Also in the first half of the century,the Chinese nation was subjected to endless bullying and humiliation,and meanwhile resisted and struggled.It is an epic of the birth and triumph of Mao Zedong Thought,too.Within the half century since the founding of the P.R.China,the greatest victory and achievement of ours is the formation of Deng Xiaoping Theory.The progress of our social civilization has exceeded any former period.At the turn of the century when we have the jubilee celebration,we should sober mindedly recognize our mission bestowed on by history,take up the opportunity,meet the challenge,and stride into the new century,in which the Chinese people will leap over the elementary stage of socialism and enter into a mature and perfect socialist society.
