A tentative study of the English translation of feudalism
摘要/Abstract
摘要：
中国古典词“封建”经与西方feudalism(feudal system/the feudal)对译,演变为剪裁历史的近代概念。林则徐等“开眼看世界”的中国人以“封建”指称西政,露密士等西方传教士、汉学家以“feudal”指称周制,只是这一过程的序曲;真正在名、实两层面使“封建”与feudalism达成对译通约的是丁韪良撰、汪凤藻译《中国古世公法论略》。近代中国新名“封建”谱系也含有与日制“封建”相互叠加混同的部分。新名“封建”的严复首创说、独创说及日源说均不能成立。
Abstract：
Classic Chinese term fengjian is translated into English feudalism, and later turned to be a historical value. Lin Zexu and other learned scholars once consider fengjian as the way of rule in the west. However, the missionary Sinologist, Loomis thinks of feudalism as the ruling Chinese system. It is William Alexander Parsons Martin that renders the equivalent conversion of feudalism for fengjian through his book, International Law in Ancient China.
