Xie Jin’s (解缙) “Ascending Zhenbian Tower” (登镇边楼) is a highly influential masterpiece in the reception history of ancient frontier poetry, which transformed Zhenbian Tower in Hezhou into one of the most compelling literary landscapes in northwestern China during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).The tower’s function as a site from which visitors could pay their respects to the imperial court on the first and fifteenth days of each lunar month provided the geographical setting and material foundation for the formation of its literary landscape.During the Ming and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties, numerous government officials and poets who had been banished or demoted ascended the tower, successively composing poems and responding to one another in the same rhyme scheme, leaving behind more than one hundred poems.These works engaged in a form of intertextual writing with Xie Jin’s “Ascending Zhenbian Tower” in terms of poetic form, emotional expression, and poetic conception.They were subsequently included in the Jiajing-era Gazetteer of Hezhou (河州志), giving rise to an anthology-based mode of circulation centered on a series of interconnected poems.This process, in turn, stimulated a flourishing wave of poetic exchanges composed in the same rhyme scheme as “Ascending Zhenbian Tower” during the Wanli period, represented by Chen Fei (陈棐), Gu Qizhi (顾其志), and Jing Zhoujun (荆州俊), marking the transition of the literary landscape of Zhenbian Tower in Hezhou into its peak period of poetic creation.The Qing Dynasty poets’ subsequent compositions in the same rhyme scheme brought this literary tradition to a fitting conclusion.
