The Interplay of Thought and Emotion: The May Fourth Era Student Cultural Movement and Intellectual Mindset through the Family Research Society

Abstract

Abstract:

Following the May Fourth Movement (1919), several students from the Faculty of Law at Peking University established the Family Research Society and published Family Research, a journal that quickly gained popularity among students. The society was composed primarily of students from Peking University’s Faculty of Law and young people from Hunan living in Beijing, who organized a range of cultural activities centered on the family. Its members were actively engaged in editing journals, translating and publishing works, giving lectures, and engaging in university education. These activities not only reflected the intense engagement characteristic of students during the May Fourth period but also revealed the intellectual and emotional journeys of the younger generation amid the disintegration of the traditional extended family.Their publishing activities embodied both rational reflection and emotional expression, conveying a complex mixture of critical engagement with tradition, sympathy for women, and admiration for merital freedom. The cultural and social reform activities undertaken by these Peking University law students thus further enrich our understanding of student activities and intellectual mindsets in the post-May Fourth period.
