Clarifying character relationships constitutes a significant aspect of The Great ChineseDictionary,as it directly pertains to the accurate presenation of form,pronunciation,meaning,and exampleusageAlthough the dictionay has made notable achevements in identifying character relaionships,certainomissions remain that require futher revision and refinement.This study systematically examines issuespertaining to three types of character relationships—variant characters,historical character forms,and phoneticloan characters—as documented in the dictionary.The analysis reveals several problems:in variant characterrelationships,there exist omissions,inaccuracies,insufficient cross-referencing,and inconsistencies inphonetic notation;in historical character relationships,omissions and erors are also identified;regardingphonetic loan characters,shortcomings include missing entries,inaccuracies,incomplete definitions,absenceof coresponding meanings under the original character entry,and phonetic notation that does not conform tothe established format.Furthemore,the terminology used for labeling characterrelationships lacks consistencyand systematicity.Based on these findings,specific revision suggestions are proposed to enhance thedictionary's treatment of character relationships.
