Situational Knowledge of Digital Humanities Tools and Situational Restoration of Technical Experience: An Alternative Path for Computational Criticism

摘要:

自“数字人文”的概念提出以来,“知识”始终构成其主要关切。以计算批评为代表的方法论,承诺在提供有关文学文本的知识之外,基于技术原理而提供有关所用技术工具的知识,并因此要求了技术工具的可解释性。然而,严格的可解释性要求会限制实践中所能采用的技术工具,而且存在概念上的困难,特别是面临当前人工智能技术的挑战。计算性诗学的解释策略,可在不涉及技术原理知识的情况下,以算法审计和黑箱化等方式,形成特定用例下对于技术工具的情境知识。不同情境知识的接合形成新的普遍性,即操作一类技术工具时人的经验的知识。这在知识形态上虽有异于当前计算批评所作的承诺,但在目标上是一致的,彰显了数字技术境况下“人”的维度。

Abstract:

Since the emergence of the concept of “digital humanities,” “knowledge” has consistently remained one of its central concerns. Methodologies represented by computational criticism promise not only to generate knowledge about literary texts but also, based on technical principles, to provide knowledge about the tools employed-thereby demanding the explainability of such tools. However, strict requirements for explainability can limit the range of technical tools available for practical use and also entail conceptual difficulties, particularly in the face of challenges posed by contemporary artificial intelligence technologies. The explanatory strategy of computational poetics, through approaches such as algorithmic auditing and black-boxing, can construct situational knowledge of technical tools in specific use cases without requiring knowledge of their underlying technical principles. The articulation of different forms of situational knowledge gives rise to a new form of generality: knowledge of human experience when operating a category of technical tools. Although this form of knowledge differs from the commitment made by current computational criticism in terms of epistemic shape, it aligns with the same objective, highlighting the dimension of the “human” within the digital technological condition.
