The utilization of novel corpora in grammatical research is motivated by both theoretical and practical considerations. The theoretical rationale stems from the intrinsic linguistic properties of fictional language, while the practical impetus arises from established traditions in grammatical studies. Novel corpora can be effectively deployed in Mandarin grammatical research through multiple approaches: identifying grammatical phenomena via close reading, formulating grammatical rules through systematic data accumulation, and verifying grammatical principles via targeted extraction. Such corpora also facilitate research in dialect grammar—where constructed examples serve as primary data with textual evidence providing supplementary support—and historical grammar, where reliance on textual evidence is mandatory and constructed examples are inadmissible. Furthermore, novel corpora enable integrated studies bridging Mandarin, dialectal, and historical grammar, as demonstrated by exemplary prior research. The effective application of novel corpora in grammatical investigation requires careful alignment with both the subject matter under investigation and the individual researcher.
