Biao-ology” user-generated videos are edited, remixed, and parody videos utilizing material from the television character Fan Debiao (范德彪), collectively forming a Northeastern image world constructed through short videos, their bullet comments, and viewer commentaries. These videos employ vaporwave and Wong Kar-wai-esque（王家卫） aesthetics as cohesive stylistic elements in their editing and recombination, creating an illusory audiovisual retro texture. Within Fan Debiao’s heroic narrative exists the potential for an anti-hero narrative, resulting in a paradoxical representation of heroism in these derivative works. The creative practices on new media platforms embody a popularized “renaissance,” connecting the character of Fan Debiao and the historical context of Northeast China with the spiritual crises of ordinary youth, thereby transforming the Northeast into a spiritual homeland for common people. As a distinctive cultural symbol in the contemporary internet landscape, the “Northeast” may ultimately represent little more than an aesthetic spectacle of the consumer era.
