The Role of Oracle Bone Morphology in Authenticating Oracle Bone Inscriptions
摘要/Abstract
甲骨形态学作为甲骨学中的重要分支之一,对考辨甲骨文的真伪具有不可替代的价值,但目前尚未得到学界的充分关注。运用甲骨形态学可有效识别两类伪刻:一是以非殷墟卜用龟甲或兽骨为载体的伪刻,如以巴西龟为载体的伪刻;二是因倒刻、横刻等异常书写方式而违背商代卜辞文例规范的伪刻,《中历藏》F11、17等便是如此。甲骨形态学也有助于鉴别因形态非常规展示而被误判为伪刻的甲骨,通过科学的形态复原予以证真。以往学者指出为伪刻的《北珍》2182、430、47经复原至正置状态和定位分析后可确定是误判,当为真品。这类误判在龟腹甲、背甲及牛肩胛骨中都存在。利用甲骨形态学考辨甲骨文真伪的过程中,需综合运用多种图版进行系统比对,细致辨析盾纹与其他痕迹的区别,并结合其他甲骨学知识与现代科技手段,全面提升甲骨文真伪鉴定的可靠性与科学性。
As an important subfield of oracle bone studies,oracle bone morphology holds unique value in authenticating oracle bone inscriptions, though it has yet to receive sufficient scholarly attention. Oracle bone morphology proves effective in identifying two types of forged inscriptions: those carved on nonYinxu divinatory turtle shells or animal bones, such as specimens using Brazilian turtle plastrons; and those that violate the conventions of Shang Dynasty oracle bone texts due to anomalous engraving techniques, such as inverted or horizontal carving, as seen in examples like F11 and F17 in the Collection of Oracle Bones Held by the Institute of History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (Zhongli Cang). Oracle bone morphology also aids in reassessing cases where authentic bones were misjudged as forgeries due to unconventional presentation. Through scientific morphological reconstruction, such cases can be reauthenticated—examples include specimens such as Nos. 2182, 430, and 47 in Peking University Collection of Oracle Bone Inscriptions (Beizhen). Previously identified as forgeries, they have been confirmed as authentic after reorientation and positional analysis. Misjudgments of this kind are found across turtle plastrons, carapaces, and bovine scapulae. In the process of applying oracle bone morphology to authenticate oracle bone inscriptions, it is essential to conduct systematic comparisons using multiple types of plates, carefully distinguish between shield patterns and other marks, and integrate knowledge from other areas of oracle bone studies with modern technological methods. Such an integrated approach significantly enhances the reliability and scientific rigor of authenticity assessment.
