The eulogy of each chapter in The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons represents Liu Xie’s (刘勰) most refined approach to formulating literary theoretical propositions. The eulogy of “Assembling the Essentials” (Fu Hui), however, has received limited scholarly attention and has not given rise to influential standalone theoretical claims. In reality, this eulogy constitutes a tightly structured and logically coherent whole. A close reading of this eulogy allows for a deeper understanding of Liu Xie’s perspective on the structure of literary works as expressed in the chapter. Specifically, Liu Xie contends that a work of art should be an organic entity characterized by “diversity within unity,” a living “form of life” that resembles “spacing branches and distributing leaves,” and an innerouter harmony achieved through the “coordination of heart and voice,” creating a rhythmic and aesthetic resonance.
