Local Modernization Beyond Enlightenment and Revolution: Reinterpreting Lu Xun’s Storm in a Teacup through Zhejiang Commercial Culture
Abstract
Lu Xun’s Storm in a Teacup (风波), a renowned story from Call to Arms (呐喊), has predominantly been interpreted through dualistic frameworks of “intellectual enlightenment” and “class revolution.” Recent scholarship transcends this binary by deconstructing grand narratives, revealing multifaceted dimensions of China’s modernization. This study re-examines the sociocultural fabric of Luzhen (鲁镇) through the lens of Zhejiang modern commercial culture and emergent local self-governance practices. Zhejiang’s robust mercantile traditions fundamentally reshaped the classical “four occupations” hierarchy, catalyzing new social strata: farmer-merchant transitionals (e.g., Sevenpounds’ family) and merchant-scholar hybrids (e.g., Seventh Master Zhao). This structural transformation engendered an attenuated response to political upheavals—epitomized by the queue-cutting edict post-1911 Revolution and its restoration during Zhang Xun’s monarchist coup. The apparent “non-event” (无事发生) in Luzhen reflects not apathy but the autonomous buffering capacity of local socioeconomic structures against top-down political turbulence, demonstrating Zhejiang’s distinctive pathway to modernization. By dramatizing this “storm” within specific structural constraints, Lu Xun exposes the disjuncture between imposed institutional reforms and latent Confucian economic ethics, revealing his profound insight into the complexities of economic-ethical modernization.
