The recently published bamboo manuscript Kongzi yue (Confucius said) from the Warring States Period (403 BC-221 BC) Chu tomb at Wangjiazui in Jingzhou contains chapters that overlap with content from the Zhongni yue (Confucius said) section of the Warring States bamboo slips housed at Anhui University. Collating these parallel texts reaffirms that the Anhui University Zhongni yue constitutes an excerpted compilation. Furthermore, comparative analysis of these two manuscripts enables a novel interpretation of Chapter Eleven in the “Jishi” (季氏) fascicle of the received Analects. Textual alignment across the three versions demonstrates that when Zhongni yue was compiled, the chapters preserved in the Wangjiazui Kongzi yue had already circulated for some time and likely derived from authentic records. Although the Analects shares fundamental characteristics with Kongzi yue, it appears to contain instances of deliberate editorial modifications from later periods.
