《文心雕龙》“登高能赋”说别释

Reinterpreting the Concept of “Capable of Composing Poetry When Ascending Heights” in The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons: A New Perspective

摘要:

《文心雕龙》所言“登高能赋”是魏晋六朝文论的重要命题。这一命题在《汉书·艺文志》中并无登坛堂赋诗之义,本指登高望山川景物,因感物而创作诗赋。登高兴情而作赋,实为早期辞赋经见之常态。六朝时人认为左思、皇甫谧皆改造“登高能赋”说原意,强调体物创作。“体物”即体察事物,铺陈表现事物,创作者必主动观照客观对象物,描摹状写之,故“体物”与“感物”有很大不同。刘勰的解释是本于原意而倡导感物创作,进言之,他倡导“登高能赋”的用意乃在于发扬谢朓等感物创作的新风。

Abstract:

The proposition “capable of composing poetry when ascending heights” (登高能赋) in The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons represents a significant literary theory of the Wei-Jin and Six Dynasties period. Contrary to the interpretation of the proposition in Treatise on Literature and Arts in the Book of Han, which does not associate it with composing poetry in ceremonial settings, the original meaning refers to the creative act of writing poetry or fu inspired by observing natural landscapes from elevated positions. During the Six Dynasties, scholars like Zuo Si (左思) and Huangfu Mi (皇甫谧) reinterpreted this concept to emphasize objective description (体物) in literary creation. However, Liu Xie’s explanation in The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons adheres to the original notion of emotional response to external stimuli (感物). Liu Xie’s advocacy of this concept aimed to promote the innovative poetic style of Xie Tiao (谢朓) and others, emphasizing spontaneous emotional expression triggered by natural scenery. This study reveals how Liu Xie’s theoretical stance both preserved the classical interpretation while supporting contemporary literary innovations.
