Communication Dynamics and Optimizing Principles in the Video-Interaction Era:A Case Study of Overseas Users’ Migration to Xiaohongshu
Abstract
The rapid growth of TikTok, a Chinese short-video platform in the United States, amassing 170 million users, faced a pivotal moment when the U.S. government’s forced divestment ban triggered a massive migration of overseas users to Xiaohongshu, another Chinese internet platform. This phenomenon garnered global attention and revealed underlying trends in human information dissemination, its dynamic systems, and developmental logic. This event signals the advent of a new communication era—the AI-driven video interaction age—marking a transformation from traditional internet media forms to AI-powered video communication. Traditional communication theories, rooted in old media structures, are becoming increasingly inadequate. The driving forces behind this new media paradigm include (1) the technological power of AI, (2) the ever-growing human demand for information, and (3) the pursuit of free and convenient deep interaction. Furthermore, the study also reveals three optimizing principles essential for achieving peak efficacy in human information dissemination: the technology-first principle, the audience-centric principle, and the principle of maximal communication. These dynamics and optimizing principles are poised to form the cornerstone of new communication theories in the forthcoming video-centric era.
