Reconstructing Ontological Security for Gig Workers: A Study Based on the Affordances of Digital Democracy

Abstract

Abstract:

The rapid development of the digital economy has exposed gig workers to multiple challenges, including ambiguous legal status, inadequate labor rights protection, and restricted democratic participation pathways, collectively contributing to their ontological insecurity. The theory of digital democratic affordances provides a valuable framework for analyzing how gig workers can utilize digital technologies for effective democratic engagement, thereby reinforcing their ontological security. This study proposes an analytical framework based on digital democratic affordance theory, suggesting the establishment of local industry organizations to provide gig workers with comprehensive support. These organizations would offer: (1) “industry + professional” rights protection services, (2) diversified digital democratic participation platforms, (3) stable online interactive communities, and (4) systematic digital literacy enhancement programs. Through these interventions spanning from external environments to internal self development, gig workers can cultivate greater self-confidence, regain control over daily life, establish a sense of belonging (“homeland”), and develop positive expectations for democratic participation, ultimately reconstructing their ontological security.
