Rediscovering Ming Dynasty Administrative Records: An Analysis of Early 16th Century Tax and Labor Service Documents Found on the Reverse of Yuefu Poetry Anthology Held in Shanghai Library

Abstract

Abstract:

The Shanghai Library houses a Ming Dynasty edition of Yuefu Poetry Anthology (乐府诗集) printed on repurposed official document paper. The reverse sides of these pages contain substantial fragments of Ming Dynasty tax and labor records, offering a rare window into local administrative practices of the period. Most significant among these is the well-preserved “Tax and Labor Yellow Register of Ninghai Township, Taizhou, Yangzhou Prefecture” from the 7th Year of Zhengde (1512), which presents exceptional opportunities for scholarly reconstruction and analysis. These records encompass diverse administrative documentation, including yellow registers from “the First Village (Li or Tu) of the Twenty-Fifth Du of Ninghai Township,” “Confiscated Shoaly Official Lands,” and “Population and Property Affairs.” Particularly valuable are four comprehensive tax and labor records from the First Village, meticulously reconstructed from eight separate household pages. These reconstructed documents not only demonstrate the authenticity and characteristic format of these early 16th century administrative records, but also provide detailed information absent from conventional historical texts of the period. This discovery constitutes a significant contribution to primary source materials for research on Ming Dynasty governance, offering invaluable insights into the fiscal and labor management systems of early 16th century China.
