The Aesthetic Dimension of the Understanding of Art

Abstract

Abstract:

The concept of “the art of beauty” marks a key moment in the differentiation and self-discipline of art, establishing a profound bond between art and aesthetics. However, the rise of modern art challenges this connection, questioning, dispelling, and discarding the notion of “the art of beauty.” Despite this, modern art has not fundamentally altered the aesthetic nature of art. In the post-modern context, the materialization and dehumanization of art underscore the continued relevance of aesthetic interpretations, which depend on a nuanced understanding of aesthetics. Aesthetic appreciation is not merely the pursuit of beauty in harmonious forms, but also an engagement with perceptual cognition, emotional responses, and the structural qualities of perception. One of the most significant contributions of aesthetics to human knowledge is its ability to reveal the “thinking” embedded in the “non-thinking” of art. The emergence of new aestheticism and new formalism in the post-theoretical age signals a partial return to aesthetics, though this return is not grounded in the ideas of Baumgarten, Kant, or Hegel. Instead, it emphasizes the “thinking and non-thinking” realm and welcomes the influence of seemingly chaotic but profoundly transformative external forces. Aesthetics, therefore, not only reshapes the discourse of art but also opens up new possibilities for its interpretation.
