The Absence of Perceptual Experience: A Critique of AI-Generated Art vs. Creative Art in Jacques Rancière’s Regimes of Art
Abstract
The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) has led to its increasing infiltration into the realm of artistic creation, augmenting imaginative capacity and diversifying artistic mediums and techniques. Despite these advancements, AI-generated art remains fundamentally distinct from genuine creative art due to the absence of a critical component: perceptual experience. Among Jacques Rancière’s tripartite categories of regimes of art, namely, the ethical, the representative, and the aesthetic regimes, it is the latter regime that sublimates the other two, as it revolves around the reconstitution of perceptual encounters and the forging of novel perceptual collectives. Genuine art, therefore, lies in its ability to encapsulate and convey lived, existential experiences. In stark contrast, AI, lacking the capacity for both perceiving and cognizing the existential depth embedded within artworks, falls short in simulating the intricate thought processes inherent to human cognition. Consequently, it fails to generate authentic life experiences and accrue genuine aesthetic worth. In the thriving age of AI, while embracing technological advancements, creative art must steadfastly affirm the irreplaceable emotive and sensory faculties unique to humanity and uphold the sanctity of genuine aesthetics. AI-generated art, impressive as it may be, cannot supplant the profound essence of human creative expression.
