White Di and Huaxia Integration During the Eastern Zhou Dynasty

Abstract

Abstract:

During the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770 BC-256 BC), initially inhabiting northern Shaanxi, the White Di ethnic group gradually migrated eastward into present-day Shanxi and Hebei provinces, where they encountered and interacted with Huaxia states. This research explores the multifaceted integration process between the White Di and the Huaxia (Chinese) people across political, economic, cultural, and ideological domains. The study reveals that political integration was achieved through strategic alliances, intermarriage, talent exchange, and recruitment practices. Military conflicts led to the annexation of White Di territories and their subsequent assimilation into Huaxia states. Economic integration was facilitated by the adoption of common currency systems, creating a unified trade network. Cultural fusion manifested in the convergence of clothing styles, burial customs, and social practices, forging a shared cultural identity. Notably, the emergence of the State of Zhongshan exemplifies the depth of this integration, as it incorporated Confucian principles, such as benevolence, righteousness, and destiny, into its governance, reflecting the adoption of Huaxia philosophical concepts. This research argues that the extensive interactions between the White Di and Huaxia across various spheres not only facilitated their integration but also contributed significantly to the formation of the broader Chinese national identity.
