Inheriting and Innovating Red Literature and Art in the New Era amid Chinese Modernization

Abstract

Abstract:

As Chinese modernization progresses, red literature and art in the new era not only uphold the core values of previous “Red Classics,” such as epochal significance, connection to the populace, and adherence to party principles, but also introduce fresh aesthetic dimensions in thematic content, character portrayal, narrative technique, and stylistic presentation. Thematic content resonates with the pulse of contemporary Chinese modernization, with narratives addressing themes like poverty alleviation, the fight against corruption, and pandemic response, expanding the traditional boundaries of revolutionary motifs. Character portrayal extends beyond the vanguard and exemplary communist party members to encompass a diverse array of civilian heroes. The narrative technique transitions from a predetermined perspective of “personal memory” to a post-set perspective of “collective memory,” offering a broader thematic scope and facilitating theoretical exploration. Stylistically, works adopt a more engaging and approachable tone, enhancing their ability to captivate and resonate with audiences. Despite the considerable innovations in red literature and art since the new era began, challenges persist, including harmonizing the communist legacy with universal human nature and aesthetics and reconciling market forces with artistic integrity. These issues, emblematic of the contemporary era, demand direct engagement and resolution amid the ongoing historical transformation.
