Changing Trends of Consumption Structure of Shanxi Merchants and Their SocialEconomic Effects in the Late Qing Dynasty: Taking Jinzhong as an Example
摘要/Abstract
清后期晋中商人物质生活极度奢靡，各类消费品量多质精。他们用于追求豪华的住宅园林与炫耀性的丧葬，以及捐纳、吸食鸦片、吹拉弹唱等各项开支日益庞大。虽然清代后期晋中商人的消费形式各不相同，但总的趋势是日益奢侈腐化。这样的物质生活和精神生活，势必消耗了大量的可以用于扩大商业的资本，还使晋中商人日益政治化，使得当地奢侈性商业发展迅速，也加速了晋中商人的败亡和当地民众的贫困。
In the late Qing Dynasty (1636 AD-1912 AD), the material life of Jinzhong merchants was extremely extravagant, and various consumer goods were abundant and of high quality. They spent increasingly on pursuing luxurious residential gardens and ostentatious funerals, as well as donating, smoking opium, and playing traditional opera. Although the consumption forms of Jinzhong merchants were different during the late Qing Dynasty, the general trend was increasingly extravagant and corrupt. This style of material and spiritual life inevitably consumed a large amount of capital that could be used to expand commerce, and also politicized the Jinzhong merchants, leading to the rapid development of local luxury commerce, accelerating the decline of Jinzhong merchants and the poverty of local people.
