The social turmoil in the Wei, Jin, Southern, and Northern Dynasties (220 AD-589 AD) brought about the continuous integration of all ethnic groups in Hebei. In this process, a new creative atmosphere came into being, with Han art as the leading factor and other ethnic arts as the auxiliary. First, the culture of the wandering swordsman became prevalent among the Han and the ethnic minorities in North China. The sturdiness and toughness of this culture had an impact on the artistic creation at that time. Secondly, the northern minorities brought a lot of exotic literature and art. Therefore, ethnic minorities music, represented by the music and dance of the western regions, and the ceremonial music of the Central Plains began to merge and blend. The prevalence of Buddhism gave people a deeper understanding of the pain in life, and the compassion of Buddhism comforts the soul in troubled times. Generally speaking, the tension between “strength” and “sadness” has left a distinct mark on the works of art in this period, constituting the most distinctive aesthetic style of art in this era.
