The study of Chinese aesthetic propositions is of important theoretical significance, and The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons by Liu Xie (ca. 465-552 AD) has constructed a large number of propositions. The supporting verses of each chapter in The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons are particularly of exemplary significance in the proposing and extracting of proposition. Different from the generally understood meaning of “praise,” supporting verse means “understanding and supporting,” as Liu Xie put forward in the chapter entitled Praise and Supporting in The Literary Mind and the Carving of Dragons, i.e., to clarify and extend the text. Liu Xie also provided a general description of the nature and function of supporting verse as “briefly highlighting the main points to fully express the literary sentiment, and end the writing with clear words.” As a literary variety, supporting verse had gone through changes in its form. Initially written in different forms of prose and verse, it has made substantial progress in the form of rhymes. Liu Xie has given a clear definition and made conscious theoretical construction of “supporting verse” as a literary variety. His supporting verses in this book are of defining significance and framing function for this variety. They put forward several classical propositions, symbolic of the maturity of propositions. These supporting verses also manifest typically the characteristics of Chinese aesthetic propositions, making them important research objects for the study of Chinese aesthetic propositions. Their study will promote the transformation of the contemporary values of propositional research.
