In Shui Hu Zhuan (Water Margin), Lu Junyi’s (卢俊义) nickname “Jade Kylin” comes from the Kylin image in Chinese culture. Although he is superb in martial arts, magnanimous and loyal to the House of the Song Dynasty, he doesn’t know much about the lower classes of society, and he is not a good Samaritan for the needy. Therefore, it is difficult for him to live up to the expectations of the brothers. He also hunts for novelty and good fame and is blinded by illusion. In addition, he is imprudent and incompetent in sizing people up. Therefore, Jin Shengtan (金圣叹) called him a camel-like character and Zhang Henshui (张恨水) regarded him as a “camel in the earth.” However, Jin Shengtan is quite fond of “Jade Kylin,” and arranged for him to be the “nightmare catcher” at the end of Shui Hu Zhuan annotated by Jin Shengtan himself. Based on the Kylin image, Jin Shengtan put “Jade Kylin” back to the traditional ethical realm of loyalty and righteousness, which carries deep emotion of the annotator. This adaption should imply “down to the end with Kylin” (Chinese Swan Song) in Records of the Historian by Sima Qian.
