Interdisciplinary research has attracted much attention in the field of comparative literature in recent years. One of the focuses is why comparative literature should be interdisciplinary. However, so far, no answer has gone beyond a basic framework, that is,crossreference among disciplines is conducive to criticism and innovation. However, this argument is far from the essence of the issue. The real purpose of interdisciplinary research is to identify the new life forms created by literature and the negational values it expresses by comparing its values with those contained in other disciplines. This can be illustrated by two trending interdisciplinary topics. For example, in the study of the relationship between literature and religion, the key is not to explain whether the literary texts quote religious materials and what religious thoughts are expressed, but to reveal the subversion of church position on religion by literature and the “arbitrary discourse” of the religious narratives. The other example is with the literary ethical criticism. The problem is not whether the literary texts reflect the ethical rules of that era. Such ethical rules should not be used to make moral accusations against literary works. Instead, it is necessary to reveal literature’s denial of the repressive order implied in social ethics. In short, the fundamental task of interdisciplinary research is to reveal the antinarrative discourse form of literature relative to other disciplines, and to maintain the inner essence of human spiritual freedom.
