Linguistics is a science that studies language phenomena and laws. The curriculum of the Chinese language aims at cultivating and improving students’ ability to use the spoken and written language. The two are closely related. The 2020 pilot Chinese language examination paper of the “New College Entrance Examination” is featured prominently by its returning to the language itself with a focus on the use of the language, especially on the relationship between the forms and their semantic and pragmatic meanings in the language. Word order, function words and sentence patterns are important aspects of language forms, the different choices of which will affect directly the effect of expression. The pilot paper designs questions in the specific context from such aspects as “word order and effect of expression ,” “word order, sentence pattern and textual location,” and “long and short sentences and effect of expression.” It is thus conducive both to test students’ real linguistic competence and language accomplishment, and to guide teachers to attach importance to imparting linguistic knowledge dynamically in connection with specific language phenomena.
