Guo Songtao (郭嵩焘), introduced by his friend Feng Guifen (冯桂芬), remarried the younger sister of Qian Dingming (钱鼎铭), a gentry in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Within one month the couple divorced, for which scholars blamed and ridiculed Guo. The crisis not only hurt his personal reputation, but also had a far-reaching impact on Guo’s family reputation and political career. In this regard, Guo Songtao reprocessed his memory through diary texts, and reshaped the images of his wives and concubines in a biased way, so as to maintain and consolidate his status as a scholar-bureaucrat and his family reputation.
