Influence of Historiography on Ruan Ji’s Literary Works

Abstract

Abstract:

Historiography had a strong influence on Ruan Ji’s (阮籍210263 AD) literary works. Ruan Ji participated in compiling the Book of Wei, the official historical records of the State of Cao Wei (220266 AD), in its late stage, which provided an opportunity for Ruan Ji to write his poem Singing My Cares (《咏怀》). As far as the content of the poem is concerned, Ruan Ji’s experience of the regime change from the Cao Wei to the Jin Empire (266420 AD) left him a historical view of the impermanence of prosperity and decline, with which he imbued his poem, hence the vicissitudes of history permeate his poem Singing My Cares. Because of his profound knowledge of history, Ruan Ji often reflected on life with a historian’s conception of time and space, which gives his poems a sense of time and space. As far as the form of poetry is concerned, because Ruan Ji was knowledgeable and productive in both history and literature, he sometimes blurs the boundary between the two in his writing, and introduces the historiography methods into his poetry, hence his mode of writing is a combination of narrative with exposition or argumentation. In addition, Ruan Ji also discussed history with his poems, hence his poems abound with historical reference value. Before Ruan Ji, literati of the Han (202 BC220 AD) and Wei Dynasties use allusions mostly of language rather than of event. Proficient in history, Ruan Ji began to use event allusions on a large scale in his poems.
