Literati of the Wei (220266 AD) and Jin (266420 AD) Dynasties started to wittingly produce graceful lines in their poems. This trend was carried forward and advanced in the early Tang Dynasty, when specially compiled collections of graceful lines appeared in the poetic circle, such as Juji (句集) and Jutu (句图). In the preface to Graceful Lines from Poets Ancient and Modern (古今诗人秀句Gujin shiren xiuju), Yuan Jing (元兢 661?? AD) elaborated on his aesthetic criteria of selecting graceful lines through his criticism of the lines selected from Xie Tiao’s (谢朓 also known as Xie Lingyun) poems. He inherited the poetic views of Liu Xie (刘勰 465520? AD) and Zhong Rong (钟嵘468-518 AD), and put forward his view on selecting graceful lines, i.e., “feelings are of top priority,” “pouring out the heart on the paper.” Since Yuan Jing’s Graceful Lines from Poets Ancient and Modern, collections of graceful lines and poetry writing interacted and promoted each other. New forms of poetic lines criticism appeared one after another, such as Jutu, Shishi (诗式 the poetic structure) and Shihua (诗话notes on poets and poetry), which is of great significance to the inheritance of literary works and the development of literary activities of future generations.
