Sima Guang (司马光10191086 AD), Fan Zuyu (范祖禹10411098 AD), Chao Yuezhi (晁说之10591129 AD) and Liu Anshi (刘安世10481125 AD) were the representatives of Shuoxue School in the Northern Song Dynasty (9601127 AD). In addition to their outstanding historical contributions, they also made great achievements in Confucian Classics. Their works on Confucian Classics involve the Five Classics, the Four Books and the Five Confucianists, amongst which stand prominent are those on Zhouyi (The Book of Changes), The Doctrine of the Mean and Mencius. Their thoughts on Confucian Classics, such as the discussion of Xu (emptiness) and Qi (life energy), “the state of equilibrium and harmony,” the essence of human nature (humanity), and the investigation of things, have promoted the development of NeoConfucianism. Shuoxue School has its own distinctive characteristics.They hold Yang Xiong (扬雄 53 BC18 AD) of the Western Han Dynasty in high esteem and raise doubts and suppress Mencius in academic origin. They put more stress on statecraft and practicality than on the discussion of moral principles in academic purpose. They emphasis selfcultivation through learning and pursuing moral perfection in academic pathways. This paper explores Shuoxue School thoughts on Confucian Classics as a whole, and analyzes their achievements, ideological system and characteristics, which is of great significance for further understanding of the academic achievements of the members of Shuoxue School and the status of Shuoxue School in the history of Confucian Classics in the Song Dynasty.
