Mao Shi Yi Tong (《毛诗异同》) is a Confucian classic by Xiao Guangyuan (萧光远), a Zunyi (遵义) scholar in the late Qing Dynasty. It is rich in poetic connotation. First is the poetic thought, manifested mainly in the new understanding of the theory of “Zheng Bian”(正变); a new theory of “Yinshi” (淫诗 obscene poetry); new proofs of Poetry and Music connected and the displacement of Ya (《雅》) and Song (《颂》). The other is the poetic method, manifested mainly in paying attention to exegesis in literature and rhetoric; mutual evidence between poetry and history; reading for nuances in the text; comment on poetry with emotion. Xiao Guangyuan’s interpretation of the Book of Songs fully reflects the close interaction between modern Confucian classics and literature.
