Historicism and the Inherent Spiritual Ailments of European Civilization

Abstract

Abstract:

The philosophical question that challenged our mind most in the 20th century is should the basic principles on which the world’s political ethics are based be naturally right or the natural rights? This question is related to the socalled “crisis of historicism,” and comes from the German philosophers who had written in English in exile in the United States. Natural rights are the principles upon which the United States was founded, and the American political system is said to be the best in the world so far. However, the exiled German philosophers did not choose the wrong occasion when he raised the question of “historicism crisis” in the United States. The socalled “historicism crisis” refers not to the crisis of “historicism” itself, but to the crisis of civilization triggered by it, that is, the basic principles of human civilization have become a problem because of the emergence of “historicism.” To understand what kind of crisis this is or even whose civilization crisis it is, we must find out the historical context of “historicism” — yet it does not come easy. Only when we see that the spiritual essence of modern western civilization originated from a profound moral break brought about by the “apostasy” of Protestantism reform, can we truly understand the inherent ailments of western democratic politics, and then realize that the “historicism crisis” is not irrelevant to our situation, because it is a universal problem, not just specific to the West.
