The phrase “shi gu bu er” (“市贾不贰”) in Teng Wengong I of Mencius (《孟子·滕文公上》) is generally interpreted as “sell at a uniform price,” i.e. “market price is the same.” This interpretation is influenced by the annotation of Zhao Qi (赵岐) in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 AD-220 AD). Regarding this phrase, Mr. Hu Chirui (胡敕瑞) put forward different ideas by examining documents handed down for generations and unearthed documents. He believed that this phrase should be interpreted as “there is no fraudulent price in the market.” However, from the interpretation of the relevant context of Mencius, the circumstantial evidence of other pre-Qin classics, and the semantic analysis based on grammatical structure, this paper affirms the interpretation by Zhao Qi. In addition, from the semantic analysis of “ju ju” (“巨屦”) “xiao ju” (“小屦”) in this paragraph in Mencius, this paper raises a question worthy of attention and reflection, that is, Mencius' unique speech style and discourse characteristics bring unique difficulties to interpretation, and there will be “misreading” and misplacement between the original text and the annotations and commentaries of the past dynasties based on the interpretation history.
