The poems in Xu Demin's anthologies Haixingxing (Sea Star) and Shijian Zhi Shengxia Yike Shu (Time only Leaves One Tree) fall under lyrics, with themes on objects, love, scenery, recollection of past memory and miscellaneous impressions. They express the poet's passionate feelings and profound thoughts with concentrated and generalized figures or images. The anthology Ren Shou Gong Huanbing (Shared Dieses of Man and Beast) depicts ripples of thoughts, billows in the heart, trancing consciousness, and galloping reverie from intuitions, illusions, associations, and suspense etc., overflowing with life's noumenon consciousness and the demands of its perception, and assuming the individuality and the overtone of exploration of the fantasy poetry. It becomes the poet's transition to abstract poetry. The anthology Abstract Poetry is an exploration and innovation of abstract poetry in the illogical combination of single Chinese characters, the irrational concentration of images, and the ingenious trial of poetic forms, like rhythms and tempos. Xu Demin initiated Fudan Poetry Society, which led to the upsurge of college students' poetry movement and formed the influential Fudan Poetry School. With exploring spirit, his poetry highlights the development track of contemporary Chinese academic poetry. He brings the modern Chinese vernacular poetry to the realm of abstract poetry, which becomes the unique achievement of his poetry.
