Abstract:
There were ups and downs in Liu He's political life (92 BC-59 BC). He was able to come the capital Chang'an because "King Guangling cannot inherit the ancestral temple." He was disposed after being emperor for only 27 days, because Huo Guang "gave a detailed account of the various manifestations of King Changyi's inability to be the emperor." The charges against Liu He also included "failure to pay his respects to the ancestral temple in person" and "holding a memorial service in Yuan Temple for King Ai of Changyi." The announcement of his final political conclusion is related to the fact that he had not been approved by the ancestral temple, the so called "…cannot inherit the will of heaven and serve the ancestral temple without being admitted by the Temple for Emperor Gao (Liu Bang). He should be deposed for ruling all peoples in the world." His dethronement was "reported to the Temple for Emperor Gao with a set of imperial sacrifices." Later he was raised to the rank of Marquis Haihun, he was still unable to participate in the ancestral temple worship all his life, "not appropriate to serve sacrifices to the ancestral temple." The role of ancestral temples in Liu He's political ups and downs is related to the ancestor worship that the Qin and Han Empires tried to promote. Whether or not "one could inherit the ancestral temple" is the decisive factor in the choice of the emperor's successor. This is analogous to a piece of wooden tablet carrying on edict unearthed from Tuzishan, Yiyang, Hunan, whereby Emperor Qin Ershi, when ascending the throne, claimed to be admitted by the ancestral temples.
