Abstract:
Brian Castro's novel The Garden Book is based on the story of the Qing poetess He Shuangqing. Centering on the Chinese heroine Swan, it depicts the extraordinary experiences of three generations of Chinese descendants. Famous for post-modern writing technique, Castro again in this book expresses his continuous humanistic concern, exposing and attacking racism prevalent in Australia. This paper discusses the four Chinese descendants, all rendered victims by Australian racialism despite their difference in age, gender, and situation. Through the discussion of each character, this paper points out the main causes behind Australian racism:self-hatred, unequal power relations and the lingering impact of White Australia Policy.
