Abstract:
Chinese Captain institution is enforced in the 19th century to meet the commercial and political needs of Netherlands East India Company. It has developed into a kind of bureaucracy extending from Badavia (West Java) to East Java and Central Java. Chinese Captain institution appears different in the three Java regions because of the dual ruling systems of Dutch colonial government and indigenous kingdom. This institution, however, has provided Chinese community at Java with an opportunity to blend into colonial society. It has contributed to the colonial economic growth as well.
